2017有得海外夏令營 – Day 3

On the third day of Yoder’s summer camp in London, our students became more familiar with both their buddies and Britain’s education system.  At Chessington Community College, classes commence at 8:30am – followed by a 20 minute break in the morning and  a 40 minute lunch break.  All students are promptly dismissed from school at 3pm.

One unique difference between schooling in both countries is the cohort concept.  In Taiwan, students remain in the same homeroom with the same classmates throughout middle school and high school.  In contrast, students in the UK have their own individual schedules.  Every class consists of a different set of students.  While there are merits in both structures, it is interesting for the Yoderlings to experience a contrasting educational system.

Throughout the day, our Yoder students scurried from class to class, experiencing what it feels like to be a “real” British student.  Some of the classes our students participated in today included: Spanish, Geography, Math, Science, Home Economics, PE, Citizenship, and Computing.  Dino, in particular, mentioned how simple Math class is compared to Taiwan.  Brian especially enjoyed baking a pie during Home Economics, while Chloe was ecstatic when she shared her experience playing cricket during PE.

All in all, our Yoder students enjoyed a fruitful day at Chessington Community College.  I am so proud of how well they have acclimated to an unfamiliar environment and their willingness to open their hearts to new experiences.
