|The Newspaper Elective||Teacher Arthur||As an adult, mornings consist of a strong cup of coffee and a perusal of the latest news while fueling up with gruel. Ingesting news is as part of our lives as can be. News affects our daily lives in more ways than one: stock exchange peaks and tumbles; currencies gain and lose; lines outside the local lottery or Starbucks increase in length. For younger readers, understanding the writing in newspapers can be an insurmountable task especially when it comes to a publication’s jargon and use of double entendres leaving them feeling disinterested. In the Newspaper Elective class we aim to make news accessible to teenagers. We will look at different publications’ headlines, outlay, and choice of vocabulary. In the process we will broaden our vocabulary, knowledge, and outlook on the world. This class is for those students who are interested in current affairs, and who are not shy to share their knowledge. The world will in fact choose the content of our weekly classes in which groups will identify the important information and compile questions to be used in quizzes where the fastest finger wins.|
|Puppet Show||Teacher Jonathan||The puppet elective is a class that lets you be creative and have fun while using English. We will design and build our own puppets and sets and then use them to act out a story that we have written. This class will be unlike any other class you have and it will give you a chance to be creative and really let your imagination go wild. The only requirements for this class are that you are willing to put in effort and have fun. If your English ability isn’t great, no problem! If you have never made a puppet or anything else in your life before, no problem! If you aren’t sure how to use a puppet to tell a story, no problem! We will learn how to do these things together and have fun!|
|3D Modeling & Printing||Teacher Robert||In Teacher Robert’s 3D class, students learn about 3D modeling and printing technologies. Bringing together math, science, language, art, and simple common sense, students explore the possibility offered by 3D printing technologies.|
|Math Challenge||Teacher Jacob||Math Discoveries and Applications will focus on helping students write, talk about, and learn some new math in English. The second semester will focus on jobs and careers where math is an important tool. The math will focus more on learning new rules instead of just doing math drills. To take this class, you must be able to work together with other students, including speaking and sharing your thoughts about the problems we will do in class. You also need to be able to give a simple speaking presentation at the end of the semester. You should take this course because the work and material is simple, and some of it may even be a review. It will also provide you with an easy way to practice your basic English skills such as writing and speaking outside of your normal language arts class.|
|Nutrition & Sports Medicine||Teacher Lonny||Nutrition and Sports Medicine is an introductory science class that familiarizes students with key concepts in exercise science, anatomy, kinesiology, nutrition, physiology, and medicine. It provides a great opportunity for students to learn about these subjects in a fun and dynamic way. Students will also learn which professions require the knowledge and skills obtained from studying these subjects (such as Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Nutrition, and Medicine).Nutrition and Sports Medicine is an interactive class. Students will be asked to participate in exercises and hands-on activities. These exercises and activities will help students learn how to improve their health, physical fitness, and sports skills.|
The material covered in Nutrition and Sports Medicine is best suited for students with a high English level. Students who do not have a high English level will find understanding the material to be difficult but may still enroll as long as they work hard and participate.
